The Identification/Crime
Scene Unit of the Beaumont Police Department is a
unit of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
It is staffed by 6 civilian crime scene technicians
who are under the supervision of a sworn officer,
all of which are specifically trained in this field.
The Crime Scene Unit works in close relationship
with CID Detectives to document and aid in the
investigation of criminal offenses. The primary
responsibility of an ID Technician is the processing
of crime scenes. These scenes range from minor
offense to homicides. Processing a crime scene
includes, but is not limited to, taking
photographs/video, searching for latent prints,
collection of samples of DNA analysis, and the
collection of evidence. In addition to processing
scenes, an ID Technician is responsible for proper
documentation of all work performed, latent print
comparison, the storage and printing of digital
photographs, and testifying in court.
Beaumont's ID unit is also the regional
location of an AFIS (Automated Fingerprint
Information System) terminal. Latent fingerprints
and palm prints from crime scenes are entered into
the system which then searches the Texas Department
of Public Safety database for possible suspect
matches. Since Beaumont has one of the only
terminals in the region, other local agencies bring
their latents here for submission as well.
The ID/Crime Scene Unit, in cooperation
with the Detectives in CID, is working diligently to
identify criminal offenders to make Beaumont a safer
community for us all.
