K9 Unit
The
Beaumont K9 Unit started in 1992 after a year long
research was conducted by officers. The K9 unit
began with four K9 Teams each consisted of a Handler
and a K9 which were German Shepherds, the dogs came
from different countries. The dogs were considered
dual purpose and still are to this date. A dual
purpose K9 performs patrol work (Building Searches,
Area Searches, Article/Evidence Searches, Tracks and
Handler Protection) and narcotic searches (Interior
/ Exterior and Vehicles). Today’s K9 are Belgian
Malinois and Dutch Shepherds from the country of
Holland. All the K9's that are used are KNPV titled.
The K9 Unit currently has four
handlers which work various patrol shifts to assist
in patrol operations. The fourth handler’s partner,
the newest addition to the K9 family, is a
bloodhound. Once the handler and his partner
complete their training, they will take to the
streets to assist in locating suspects, missing
persons and evidence. The K9 Unit conducts
approximately 1500 building searches/building
checks, 360 narcotic searches and 100 tracks of
fugitives annually. The unit is responsible with
assisting on capturing several suspects and locating
large amount of narcotics. Throughout the year you
may see the unit training or conducting a demo.
The
K9 Unit’s primary function is to act as a support
unit for patrol and respond to all in-progress
calls. The Unit also has an active role in assisting
SWAT, Narcotics and SRT. The Unit has assisted SWAT
on numerous tactical operations, narcotics with
search warrants and SRT with field force situations.
The K9 Unit has conducted waterway operations with
US Coast Guard and US Customs. The K9 Unit continues
to assist Federal, County and Local Agencies.
Each
K9 Team is assigned a Chevy police package Tahoe.
Each is equipped with an insert that provides the K9
a secure area. Each is equipped with a temperature
monitoring device. There is also other special
equipment is used for training and placed in the
vehicle.
The K9
Unit are members of the National Police Canine
Association (N.P.C.A.) and National Narcotic
Detector Dog Association (N.N.D.D.A.) which they
certify with annually both in patrol and narcotics.
They participate in regional and national seminars
to receive case law updates and take part in
training conducted by instructors from around the
world. Throughout the years, the Unit has won
several awards, in 2004, Officer D. Valdez and K9
Cabiel (Ret.) won "Top Dog" honor at the N.P.C.A.
National Seminar in Pasadena, Texas. The Team also
won numerous regional awards. Officer P. Smith and
K9 Marco won 5th place in patrol at a regional
seminar, Lafayette, La. There are other retired and
former K9 members that have also placed in national
