Winter Weather Tips

RELEASE DATE: January 12, 2012

CONTACT: Officer Carol Riley | 409-880-4832, 409-284-2563

The City of Beaumont’s Emergency Management Office Offers Tips for Cold Weather.

Beaumont, Texas – Colder winter weather is heading our way with temperatures expected to drop below freezing during the nighttime and early morning hours on Friday and Saturday. In preparation for the upcoming cold weather, the City of Beaumont Emergency Management Office recommends the following steps to ensure your safety and comfort:

Remain indoors if possible. If you must go out, dress to fit the weather, with layered, wind-resistant clothing, a hat, and gloves or mittens to protect yourself against frostbite.

If you must perform work outside, take frequent breaks to warm up and avoid overexertion.

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that could catch fire. Have emergency heating equipment approved for indoor use and appropriate fuel for it. Emergency heating equipment includes kerosene or propane heaters and wood stoves.

Have emergency lighting in case the power goes out: flashlights or lanterns with a supply of batteries or fuel.

Keep an emergency supply of ready-to-eat non-perishable food and an emergency supply of water on hand.

Listen to your radio or TV to obtain weather and emergency information. Have a battery-powered radio with spare batteries in case your electricity goes off.

Travel only if absolutely necessary. If you must travel, do so in day light. Slow down. In some cases ice on the roadways is not visible. Carry a charged cell phone with you so you can call for help if needed. Have emergency supplies in your vehicle.

Bring pets/companion animals inside or provide a sheltered area for them to go to.

Insulate outside water faucets or pipes. Allow faucets to drip a little to avoid freezing. If residents experience a broken water pipe that is located on the resident’s side of the meter, the water should be turned off at the meter and arrangements for repairs should be made. If you need assistance with turning off your meter, you are asked to call the Fire Department at 409-880-3901.

Remember, proper planning can make winter weather events more manageable and comfortable for everyone.

Team Work Leads to the Arrest of 2 South End Burglars

On Monday, January 9, 2012 at 11:13am, Officers responded to the 4400 block of Ector in reference to a burglary. A 27 year old black male reported that he was at home asleep and woke to find two black males in his house. The suspects made entry by kicking open the rear door. He chased the two black males from the house and caught one of them in the back yard. He released the suspect when two more suspects came back to help him. The victim got a weapon from his house and chased the subjects until he lost sight of them running toward Avenue A.

There have been numerous burglaries in the area. Patrol Officers and Investigators have identified the suspects, but have had little to no cooperation from witnesses on the cases. Some witnesses have been intimidated and others just afraid to get involved. Patrol Officers have made numerous field contacts and have worked hard to locate and identify a ring of burglars in the south end.

Officer Randy Stevens was familiar with the M.O. of the suspects and knew from field contacts and witness information, where the suspects were possibly hiding. Officers Stevens located the two suspects in a stolen vehicle, a 2000 silver Toyota, at the Colonial South Apartments. The 27 year old witness was cooperative and helped identify the suspects as the burglars that entered his home.

So, I am pleased to report that due to diligence on the part of a Citizen, a Patrol Officer and the Detective Division, two suspects are in custody for Burglary of a Habitation and other charges are pending.

Aaron Owens, black male, 17 years of age, from Beaumont

Jordan Williams, black male, 18 years of age, from Beaumont

There isn't a picture available for Owens at this time.

Both males were taken to the station to speak with detectives and then transported to Jefferson County Jail where they were booked in for Burglary of a Habitation.

Proactive Police Work Leads to Apprehension of Auto Burglary Suspect

Friday evening January 6 officers from our Street Crimes Unit conducted a surveillance operation on Jerry Allen Motors, located at 135 N. Eleventh St. The surveillance was set up because our Department has noticed a pattern of auto burglaries occurring at and around this location. During the surveillance at around 8:28 pm, officers saw a male go onto the property and enter a vehicle on the lot. The man stole a car stereo amp and was attempting to steal other items as officers approached him. He took off running and after a brief foot pursuit, officers took him into custody without incident.

The man was identified as Jerry Patrick Wagner, a forty one year old resident of the south end of Beaumont. Upon Wagner’s arrest, officers also located several additional items in his vehicle that had been stolen in previous auto burglaries from Jerry Allen Motors.

This was an outstanding example of proactive policing that resulted in the apprehension of a suspect possibly linked to numerous auto burglaries in our city.

Man Shoots at Officers Who Are Then Forced To Return Fire

On Friday 01/06/2012 at approximately 7:53 am, Patrol Division Officers responded to a call of a suspicious male, dressed all in black, in the 1500 block of Elgie. Officers arrived and located the man sitting at the cul-de-sac at the end of the block. As Officers approached him, they saw that he had both hands in the pockets of his heavy jacket. He was asked to remove his hands from his pocket but he refused to comply. Because of the subject’s failure to comply with the officer’s instructions, they feared that he was armed. They continued to tell him to remove his hands from his pocket but he refused. The man then stood up and began to walk away.

As Officers followed, the man pulled a revolver from his pocket. Officers attempted to contain the subject who continued to walk away as he was heard saying, “I’m going to die today!” Officers followed the subject who continued to walk away with the gun now back in his pocket. The man walked two blocks west and north of his original location and ended up in front of a residence located in the 1700 block of Harriot St. Officers were able to contain the man at that location and Crisis Negotiators were on scene to attempt to persuade him to surrender peacefully.

Negotiators attempted to talk with the man via police car P.A. but he refused to talk or comply with any instructions. He could be heard mumbling unintelligibly and kept his right hand in his pocket on the gun. At one point, the man knelt and began to walk back and forth on his knees in the yard. He then quickly pulled the revolver out of his pocket, aimed it at and shot multiple rounds at the officers. The officers, fearing for their lives as well as the lives of innocent neighbors in adjoining houses, had no alternative but to return fire. The man was struck multiple times and fell to the ground. Officers immediately summoned Beaumont EMS to approach from their staging area about a block away. Paramedics treated the subject at the scene and he was then transported to Christus Saint Elizabeth ER. The subject was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. No officers were injured in spite of the man’s attempt to kill them.

The subject was a 37-year-old resident of the south end of Beaumont. His name is not being released pending formal notification of his next of kin.
