Hurricane Preparedness Week May 26th to June 1st

May 26th to June 1st is Hurricane Preparedness week. The City of Beaumont Emergency Management Team would like to remind you to have preparations made in advance. You can register your cell phone for emergency alerts by calling 311. If you are going to need transportation or assistance in the event of an evacuation, register with 211. If you have already registered you do not need to register again. If you have moved, please update your information or let the operators know you will no longer need assistance. For more information on Hurricane Preparedness and evacuation information click on the link provided.

Talk with your family about your plans. Being prepared will help alleviate confusion and minimize the sense of panic or helplessness during an emergency. Make "ready bags" or "comfort kits" and let your children help.

We pray for a non eventful 2013 hurricane season, but together we can get prepared and minimize loss of life and property.

Bat Found in West End Home Tested Negative for Rabies

Rabies Test Was Negative for The Bat Found in West End Home.

Beaumont, Texas: The Houston Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed, that the bat the was found inside a house on San Anselmo St, in Beaumont’s west end, tested negative for Rabies. The victim no longer has to worry about going through the post-exposure series of shots.

The Bat was discovered in the house this past Sunday morning and was captured by Animal Services and sent to the Houston lab on Monday for testing. Bats are high risk animals when it comes to rabies and with any potential human bites or actual bites the testing is mandatory. If no contact were made, then it would be recommended to release the bat into the wild.

Animal Services would like to remind people that May through August is maternity season for bats in our region. One might encounter baby bats learning to fly or mother bats that are on the ground, being weighted down by her pups. It might be hard to tell if this is the case or if the bat is really sick; therefore, we recommend to never handle a downed bat. If you find a downed bat contact your local animal control authority to remove it and make a determination if it is sick or releasable.

Beaumont Animal Services may be contacted by dialing 311 or for more information on bats visit: www.batworld.org.

Sex Offender Arrested for Violating His Probation

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, a Beaumont Police Detective developed information that John Brenton Daigre, 30 year old registered sex offender from Jefferson County, was operating a fraudulent business to solicit applications for female models at a local hotel. Investigation revealed that Daigre had formed the business named "Pastry on Wheels" and had developed a website where people could apply for various positions. Daigre would then set up appointments to direct female applicants to a meeting room at a local hotel, where he would interview and photograph them.

On Friday, May 3, 2013, Beaumont Police officers from the Special Assignments Unit, Special Services Division and Special Crimes Investigations Unit conducted an undercover operation targeting the fraudulent business being operated by Daigre. A female officer working in an undercover capacity, contacted Daigre and met with him at the area hotel. Daigre had set up a meeting room and was conducting interviews. Backup officers monitored the conversation and then contacted Daigre. He was found to be in violation of numerous provisions of his sex offender status and his probation.

Based on the information developed during the investigation, Jefferson County Adult Probation officers obtained an arrest warrant for Daigre for Motion To Revoke Probation for a previous sex crimes offense. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

This operation could not have been done without the assistance of the Jefferson County Adult Probation Office and the Jefferson County Sheriff Department’s Sex Offender Registration Unit.

Lumberton man dies in head-on collision

On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at about 8:15 pm, Jason Scott Wilcox, a 30-year-old resident of Lumberton, was driving a 1992 Honda Accord when he entered Hwy 69 North heading southbound in the northbound lane. Wilcox entered the freeway going the wrong way at the Tram Road exit ramp. Shortly after entering the freeway, Wilcox sideswiped a 2005 Dodge pickup and continued to drive southbound in the northbound lane. He then collided head-on with a 2003 Ford pickup on Eastex Freeway over the LNVA canal. Wilcox sustained fatal injuries during that second crash.

The driver and two passengers of the Dodge pickup were not injured and the driver of the Ford pickup sustained minor injuries. He was treated and released from St. Elizabeth E.R.

Traffic backed up just south of the second crash site and that resulted in another minor crash between four vehicles. No one in that crash was seriously injured.

Traffic Unit Investigators are working to determine what caused Wilcox to enter the freeway going the wrong direction. Preliminary autopsy results may reveal facts that led to the cause of this fatal crash.
